Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that an “agreement on the release of the hostages” had been reached. This came after Netanyahu delayed a cabinet vote on approving the Gaza ceasefire deal and accused Hamas of seeking last-minute changes.

His political security cabinet will meet later on Friday and the government “will then meet to approve the deal,” Netanyahu’s office said, the BBC reports.

The agreement, first announced on Wednesday, is set to come into force on Sunday.

Gaza’s health ministry said dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes since the announcement. On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

The attack sparked a massive Israeli offensive in Gaza that killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
