Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he understood that the club’s fans booed him and his team during their 5-2 win over Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey round of 16 on Thursday, which he described as an act of frustration the 2:5 defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.
Ancelotti said he was glad his team showed character not to be influenced by their fans’ anger and progressed to the quarter-finals on Thursday.
“I see it as a wake-up call from the fans for the team and their coach.” It’s an acceptable wake-up call after what happened in the game against Barcelona. “Then the team reacted well,” Ancelotti said in a press conference.
“The fans let us down to wake us up because the team started to complicate the game that we were on the way to winning 2-0.” But then the fans started pushing and if “Santiago Bernabeu” is pushing, it’s something very special for us. “We played well in extra time and managed to win the game, so in the end everything was fine,” the Italian coach added.
Ancelotti lamented his side’s missed chances to extend their lead in the second half and urged the players to remain focused in the final minutes of the game.
